This course applies to a wide range of settings where emergencies involving asthma episodes may occur. It is relevant for teachers, childcare workers, aged-care workers, disability workers, sports coaches, youth workers and designated workplace first aiders. It provides the skills and knowledge to be able to develop an asthma risk assessment and emergency management plan and provide asthma-related first aid interventions in the workplace. It includes:

  • Background knowledge of the triggers, signs and symptoms of asthma
  • Risk minimisation and management strategies for asthma emergencies
  • Guidelines of asthma peak bodies
  • Emergency treatment for an asthma episode
  • Communicating details to emergency services
  • Workplace incident recording and reporting
  • Evaluating responses to asthma emergencies


There are no prerequisite units for this course. It is recommended that participants have language and literacy skills equivalent to level 3 of the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF).
